He put a story on Instagram and spoke his heart out. Recent form was a matter of concern for Rohit Sharma, one of the most successful captains of Team India. This is the reason why it was being said about him that it is possible that he may not be selected in the series against England or he may be removed from the captaincy.

Meanwhile, Hitman surprised and shocked everyone by taking this sudden decision. Indian team’s regular captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect. This has now put an end to the speculation about his future in the longest format. Rohit is India’s most successful batter in the Test format, scoring 4301 runs in 67 Test matches at an average of 40.57 with the help of 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries.

Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket from his social media handle. He shared a picture of his Test cap on Instagram Story and wrote in the caption – I want to tell all of you friends that I am retiring from Test cricket. It is a matter of great pride for me to represent my country in this format. Thank you very much to all of you. I will continue to play for India in ODIs.

Rohit Sharma has Already Retired from the T20 Format

After leading India to the T20 World Cup 2024 title, Rohit Sharma along with Virat Kohli announced his retirement from this format. India won this title by defeating South Africa by seven runs. After leading the Indian team to the T20 World Cup title for the second time, both the veterans surprised everyone by retiring from T20. Now the 38-year-old has announced his retirement from the long format of cricket. Now he will be seen leading India only in ODIs.

Rohit Sharma was Going Through a Bad Phase

Rohit Sharma has been struggling in Test cricket for some time now. He did not score any runs in the home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand as well. After this, the Australia tour in December 2024 and January 2025 was forgettable for him. During this entire period, Rohit’s average in 8 Test matches was 10.93 and he was able to cross the score of 50 only once. India won both the Tests against Bangladesh, but New Zealand defeated India 3-0 and lost 3-1 in the BGT.

Rohit went through a bad phase during the 2024-25 season. He scored 164 runs in 15 matches at an average of 10.83. Rohit was in poor form during the home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand. After this, he did not play in the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to the birth of his son. When Rohit returned during the second Test in Adelaide, he did not open and sent Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul to open the innings.

In the absence of Rohit, the pair of Yashasvi and Rahul had a partnership of 201 runs in the first Test. That’s why, Rohit came out to bat at number six, but was seen struggling. He scored just 10 runs in the third Test played in Brisbane. After this, Rohit returned to the top order, but failed there too and scored three and nine runs in the Melbourne Test. Shubman Gill was dropped from the fourth Test and then Gill returned in place of Rohit for the fifth Test.

The last series for Rohit, who is called the King of Mumbai, was Australia’s Border Gavaskar Trophy, in which he was struggling with poor form. When criticism started, he decided to keep himself out of the playing-11 of the last Test, which was played in Sydney. At the same time, speculations started that Rohit Sharma’s Test career has now come to a halt. However, Rohit Sharma came in front of the media after this and denied it.

Won ICC Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup

After the Australia tour, Rohit captained Team India in the Champions Trophy. In the tournament hosted by Pakistan, he did wonders not only with the captaincy but also with the bat. Team India won the ICC Champions Trophy title after 12 years. India defeated New Zealand in the final. He joined MS Dhoni’s special list. India also won the T20 World Cup title last year under his captaincy.

During this period, Rohit played 67 Tests, out of which he captained 24. He took over the reins of the team from Virat Kohli in 2022. He has scored a total of 4301 runs including 12 centuries.

Due to this, his debut was postponed there. Then Rohit made his debut 3 years later in the Kolkata Test against West Indies in 2013. Rohit started his Test career with a century and scored 177 runs.
