Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is taking a firm stance against fare evasion with the introduction of a new Automated Passenger Counting (APC) system. This cutting-edge technology is set to be installed in a fleet of 636 new buses, including electric, articulated, and double-decker models.

How It Works

The APC system employs advanced sensors to accurately count passengers as they board and exit buses. This real-time data is then cross-referenced with fare collection records to identify any discrepancies. If the system detects a mismatch between the number of passengers and the number of fares paid, the appropriate authorities will be alerted.

A Fine for Fare Dodgers

Commuters caught evading bus fares face a hefty fine of Dh200. This strict measure aims to deter fare dodging and ensure fair contributions from all passengers towards the upkeep of Dubai’s public transportation system.

RTA: Beyond Fare Enforcement

The APC system offers more than just fare enforcement. It provides valuable insights into passenger demand patterns, allowing the RTA to optimize bus routes and schedules for improved efficiency and passenger convenience. Additionally, new buses will be equipped with the ‘Raqeeb’ driver behavior monitoring system to enhance passenger safety and driver accountability.

Tackling Fare Evasion

The RTA has been proactive in addressing the issue of fare evasion. Recent inspections revealed a significant number of offenders, highlighting the need for stricter measures. With over 1,500 buses serving more than 350,000 passengers daily, the implementation of the APC system is a crucial step in ensuring fair fare collection.

A Step Towards a Smarter City

Dubai’s commitment to technological advancement is evident in the adoption of the APC system. This initiative aligns with the city’s vision of becoming a smart and sustainable metropolis. By leveraging data-driven insights and implementing innovative solutions, the RTA aims to enhance the overall public transportation experience for residents and visitors alike.

As Dubai continues to grow and evolve, the APC system represents a significant step forward in ensuring a fair and efficient public transportation network.
