Catching the train is usually the easy part. The tricky bit is getting to the station and figuring out where to go once you step off. Etihad Rail now wants to fix that.
The national train operator has partnered with the Citymapper app, its parent company Via and the transport operator United Trans. The idea is simple: you see your whole journey in one place.
What the Citymapper App Does
Citymapper lets you compare different ways of travelling. It combines Etihad Rail trains with the metro, buses, on-demand transport and other options. So a traveller can see how to get from home to the station, which train to take, and how to reach the final destination.
One thing to note: you’ll still book and manage your train tickets through the Etihad Rail website and app. Citymapper is there to help you plan the connections across the wider UAE transport network, not to replace booking.
Why This Matters Now
The timing makes sense. The national passenger network officially launched on September 30, and trains now run across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Al Dhaid and Fujairah. As more people ride, getting to and from the stations becomes a bigger part of the trip.
The network has grown in stages. Abu Dhabi to Fujairah services began first, on June 30, as an introductory phase. Dubai services then started from Al Yalayis Station in Jumeirah Golf Estates on September 30. Al Dhaid Station in Sharjah serves the central region and offers direct trains to Fujairah and Abu Dhabi.
An Etihad Rail spokesperson also said the Liwa station is expected to open in November, before the Liwa festival begins. No exact date has been shared yet.
What the Partners Said
Adhraa Al Mansoori of Etihad Rail Mobility said the goal is to give customers more choice and confidence. In her view, planning a train trip should be simple and fit naturally into how people already move around the UAE. She added that working with partners like Citymapper helps support the experience beyond the rail journey itself.
Chris Snyder of Via said passengers now expect different transport networks to work together as one experience. Lionel Joseph, Head of Operations at United Trans, said integrated mobility depends on strong teamwork between transport providers, operators and technology partners.
Connections Are Already Improving
Better planning tools matter most when the physical links are good too, and those are growing. In Dubai, a pedestrian bridge now connects Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station with Etihad Rail’s Al Yalayis Station. The covered walk has escalators and moving walkways and takes around five to seven minutes. We covered it in our story on the Dubai Metro walking link to Etihad Rail.
Demand has also been strong since launch. Etihad Rail added extra weekend services soon after opening, which we reported in our piece on six extra Dubai Abu Dhabi trains. And if you missed the opening day coverage, here’s the story of President Sheikh Mohamed travelling on Etihad Rail as the Dubai station opened.
Tips for Planning Your Trip
Check your route in Citymapper first, then book your seat on the Etihad Rail website or app. Leave a little extra time for the first and last legs of your journey, especially if you’re using a bus or metro connection. And if you’re travelling on a busy day, book ahead, since some services have filled up quickly in the past.
A train network is only as useful as the trips around it. With Citymapper, planning a UAE journey from your front door to your final stop gets a lot simpler. It’s a small change, but for regular travellers, it could make choosing the train a much easier decision.
