Sheikh Rashid Road: Dubai, the city of extravagance and innovation, is setting its sights on a greener future. This commitment to sustainability is evident in a recent project that’s seen a major transformation on one of Dubai’s busiest roads, Sheikh Rashid Road.

Over a staggering 900 streetlights lining the 9km stretch have undergone an eco-makeover, receiving an upgrade to environmentally-friendly LED technology. This project, spanning ten lanes of traffic, ensures improved visibility for motorists travelling in both directions.

The initiative, which took six months to complete, addressed lighting upgrades in phases. The first stage focused on the area between Deira and Al Garhoud Bridge. Following this, they tackled the vicinity surrounding Al Garhoud Bridge, separating Sheikh Rashid Street between Deira and Bur Dubai. Finally, the intersection of Sheikh Khalifa Street and Sheikh Rashid Road received the energy-efficient lighting treatment.

This upgrade aligns perfectly with the UAE’s Sustainability Year Initiative 2024. The new LED lights boast a significant 60% reduction in energy consumption compared to their predecessors. Furthermore, their extended lifespan translates to an impressive 173% improvement, meaning these lights will illuminate Dubai’s streets for a remarkable 66,000 hours.

Dubai’s green efforts extend beyond lighting upgrades. The city is actively pursuing initiatives to promote a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle for residents. Earlier in May, Dubai announced plans to expand over 200 parks, providing residents with more green spaces to enjoy. Additionally, cycling enthusiasts will be thrilled to learn about the planned 300% extension of cycling tracks along Dubai’s beaches.

The future looks bright for cyclists in Dubai. A massive new cycling track is on the horizon, stretching 13.5km between Dubai Hills and Al Sufouh via Hessa Street. This ambitious project also includes the construction of two new bridges, each exceeding 500 meters in length, that will span Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. Designed with separate lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, these futuristic bridges will connect seamlessly with the Dubai Internet City metro station.

Dubai’s commitment to sustainability is a welcome sight. The recent lighting upgrade on Sheikh Rashid Road represents a significant step towards a more eco-friendly future. Coupled with the expansion of parks, cycling tracks, and the upcoming mega cycling path, Dubai is well on its way to becoming a beacon of sustainable urban living.
