Getting around Dubai just got a bit easier. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced a digital ticketing service that lets passengers travel on the Dubai Metro, Tram and public buses using a QR code on their smartphones. That means no more paper tickets.
Both residents and visitors can use it, which is great news for tourists who don’t want to deal with physical cards on a short trip.
How to Get Your Digital Ticket
You can buy a digital nol ticket through either the nol Pay app or the S’hail app. The steps are simple:
- Open either app
- Choose a single trip ticket or a one-day pass
- Select your travel zone or destination
- Complete the payment
Once you pay, the QR code is issued right away, and you can open it directly inside the app.

Where to Scan Your QR Code
On the Metro, passengers scan their QR codes at the blue entry gates. On buses, you hold your phone over the red nol readers near the entrance to validate your ticket. The same service also works on Dubai Tram.
So there’s no need to hunt for a ticket machine or queue up at a counter. If your phone is charged and your ticket is ready, you can walk straight through.
How Long Is a Digital Ticket Valid?
According to the RTA’s official service guidance, an unused QR ticket stays valid for up to 90 days from the date you buy it. That gives you plenty of time to use it, which is handy if you buy one before a trip and travel later.
One-day passes work a little differently. Once activated, a one-day pass is valid only until midnight on the same day, not for a full 24 hours. So if you activate it in the evening, you won’t get much use out of it.
A Few Things to Remember
Passengers must scan their digital tickets when they check in and when they check out. You also need to keep the ticket easy to open throughout your journey, including when you switch between different transport services. Before heading out, it’s smart to make sure your phone has enough battery and that your ticket loads quickly.
For visitors, this is especially useful. You can buy your ticket before you even reach the station and skip the hassle of finding the right machine.
Part of a Bigger Digital Shift in Dubai
This new service fits neatly into a wider trend in the city. Dubai has been moving fast toward digital payments in almost every part of daily life. If you want to see how far that shift has gone, our piece on how 9 out of 10 payments in Dubai are now cashless shows what the latest numbers look like.
Digital changes are also reaching the way people live. If you rent a home in Dubai, you may want to check which areas will allow or ban shared housing to see whether your neighbourhood made the list.
The Bottom Line
QR code tickets make using public transport in Dubai simpler, quicker, and a little more flexible. Whether you live in the city or you’re just visiting for a few days, you can now buy, store and scan your ticket from one app on your phone.
