The abra is one of the most loved ways to get around Dubai. It is cheap, it is quick, and it gives you a lovely view of the creek. Now this old favourite is getting a modern touch. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has added four new fourth-generation traditional abras to its marine fleet, with better seating, smart technology and improved facilities for passengers.
What Is New on the Boats?
Each new abra can carry up to 24 passengers. The RTA says the boats follow the latest technical and safety standards. The whole idea is to make rides more comfortable and easier for both residents and visitors.
Inside, you will see upgraded seating and flooring. The space has also been planned better, so the boat feels roomier and more pleasant during the ride.
| Feature | What passengers get |
|---|---|
| Capacity | Up to 24 passengers per abra |
| Seating and flooring | Upgraded for more comfort |
| Digital screens | Real time travel info, safety messages, awareness content |
| Destination boards | Electronic boards, a first for this model |
| Accessibility | Designated areas for People of Determination |
Smart Screens and Destination Boards
The new abras come with digital screens that show real time travel information. They also display safety messages and awareness content, so passengers stay informed while crossing the water.
There is one first here. These are the first abras to have electronic destination boards, which is a new feature in the fourth generation model. The boards make it easier to see where the boat is heading and to find travel details. This will help tourists in particular, who may not know the stations well.
Better Access for Everyone
The boats have designated areas for People of Determination, which makes it easier for passengers with different mobility needs to get on board and use the service.
The RTA also says the abras follow the Dubai Universal Design Code, which sets access rules for public places and services. They have certificates showing they meet the relevant Gulf Standard Specifications and safety rules too. Khalaf Belghuzooz Al Zarooni, Director of Marine Transport at the RTA’s Public Transport Agency, said each boat was designed to approved engineering standards and health and safety requirements, to give every passenger a comfortable trip.
Why Is the RTA Doing This?
Al Zarooni said the new abras are part of a bigger effort to make marine transport a strong part of Dubai’s public transport network. He said they will help raise service quality, work efficiency and passenger safety, while meeting the needs of a growing city.
The plan is also about choice. The RTA wants people to use different kinds of public transport, and it hopes a more modern abra will make marine travel attractive for daily commuters as well as tourists. Al Zarooni added that the authority will keep bringing in modern and sustainable mobility solutions as Dubai grows.
This is not the first marine upgrade lately. The RTA recently upgraded five marine transport stations with air conditioning and Wi-Fi, and it resumed the tourist electric abra service at Al Mamzar Station.
What It Means for You
If you ride an abra regularly, you may notice the difference right away. Seats feel better, screens keep you informed and the destination boards save you from guessing. If you are a visitor, a short abra ride is still one of the best budget friendly experiences in the city, and now it feels a little more polished.
Plan Your Week
A creek ride fits nicely into a busy city week. If you are planning family outings around the festival, here are 6 Diwali events in the UAE that are worth planning for the whole family.
Runners can also get ready for an active season. Registration opens for Dubai Run 2026, with routes, bib collection and what you need to know, so you can sign up early.
The classic abra is not going anywhere. It is simply getting better, and that is good news for everyone who loves the creek.
