Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of Al Nassr and five-time Champions League winner, has been suspended for one game and fined 30,000 riyals ($8,000) by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF). The suspension stems from a gesture Ronaldo made during his team’s 3-2 victory over Al Shabab last weekend.

The SAFF deemed the gesture a “provocation” and a violation of the league’s regulations prohibiting offensive behavior towards the public during matches. The decision is final and cannot be appealed.

Video Goes Viral

Social media was abuzz after the match, with a video showing Ronaldo making the gesture in response to chants of his long-time rival Lionel Messi’s name from the opposing crowd. The content quickly went viral and became a top trending topic on Saudi social media platforms.

Ronaldo Denies Offensive Intent

According to the sports newspaper Al Riyadiya, Ronaldo expressed his respect for all football clubs and clarified that the gesture symbolized “strength and victory,” not offense. He further claimed that such gestures are considered acceptable in European football.

Ronaldo: A Pioneer in Saudi Arabia’s Football Transformation

Ronaldo’s arrival in January 2023 marked a significant moment for Saudi football. The 39-year-old superstar became the first major player of his caliber to join the Saudi Pro League, signifying the league’s increasing appeal and ambition.

Saudi Arabia’s Rise in Global Sports

This transfer reflects Saudi Arabia’s growing appetite for global sports prominence. The kingdom has embarked on a spending spree, attracting renowned players like Karim Benzema, Neymar, and Sadio Mane with lucrative contracts. Additionally, Saudi Arabia is set to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, further solidifying its aspirations in the world of sports.

Critics See “Sportswashing” Motives

Despite these developments, some critics allege Saudi Arabia is engaging in “sportswashing,” attempting to use athletics to divert attention from its human rights record and environmental issues that have garnered international condemnation.

The incident involving Ronaldo highlights the complexities surrounding Saudi Arabia’s foray into the world of professional football. While aiming to leverage the sport’s global appeal, the kingdom also faces scrutiny for its approach.
