What is a Blue Supermoon?

Before we dive into the best viewing spots, let’s clear up the confusion surrounding the term “blue supermoon.” There are actually two types:

  1. Seasonal Blue Moon: This is the less rare of the two, referring to the third full moon in a season with four full moons.
  2. Monthly Blue Moon: This is the more uncommon occurrence of two full moons within a single month.

The moon we’ll be witnessing on Monday is a seasonal blue moon. The next monthly blue supermoon won’t grace our skies until May 31, 2026.

A supermoon occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth, making it appear larger and brighter than usual. The name “blue moon” is a bit misleading as it doesn’t refer to the moon’s color; it’s believed to originate from an old English phrase meaning “betrayer moon.”

Dubai Astronomy Group Event

For those eager to learn more about this celestial phenomenon, the Dubai Astronomy Group is hosting a special evening on Monday. It will include a Q&A session, supermoon observation, and even a screening of the film “Fly Me to the Moon.”
