Air India is about to do something that travellers from Northeast India have been waiting a long time for. Starting August 4, the airline will launch direct flights from Guwahati to both Dubai and Abu Dhabi — no layovers, no connecting through Delhi or Mumbai, no unnecessary hours added to the journey.
For passengers from Assam and the surrounding northeastern states, this is a genuine shift. Getting to the UAE used to mean routing through a major hub first, adding time and stress to what should be a straightforward trip. That changes now.
The launch also signals something bigger — Guwahati’s growing importance as an international aviation gateway, and Air India’s intent to serve parts of the country that have long been underserved on the global route map.
A Big Boost for Travellers From Northeast India
For years, anyone flying internationally from the Northeast had to build connecting flights into their plans as a matter of course. That reality made Gulf destinations harder to reach and added unnecessary friction for the large number of people who travel regularly between this region and the UAE.
The new non-stop services change that entirely. Tourists, business professionals, students and families with relatives in Dubai or Abu Dhabi will all benefit from a much cleaner travel experience. So will the sizeable Indian diaspora already living in the UAE, who now have a direct link back to the Northeast.
The practical difference will be felt most by elderly passengers and families travelling with young children — the people for whom a long transit can turn a manageable journey into an exhausting one.
Flights to Operate Four Times a Week
Both the Guwahati-Dubai and Guwahati-Abu Dhabi routes will run four times a week, giving travellers a reasonable spread of options when planning around work schedules or holiday windows.
Four weekly frequencies is a solid start for newly launched international routes from a regional city. It provides enough regularity for frequent flyers while also giving the airline room to read demand and scale accordingly.
Beyond the direct journey, the routes also open up onward connections through two of the world’s busiest aviation hubs, adding even more value for passengers with wider travel plans.
Government Supports Better Global Connectivity
The Assam government has thrown its full support behind the announcement. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the launch as a meaningful achievement for the state — one that addresses a long-standing gap in direct international connectivity from Guwahati.
State officials see the flights as more than just a travel convenience. Better international air links tend to pull investment, strengthen trade and make a region more attractive to visitors who might not have considered it otherwise. For Assam, which has been positioning itself as the commercial and tourism hub of Northeast India, this kind of connectivity matters.
It also fits into India’s broader push to expand direct international access from cities beyond the traditional big four — and to build aviation infrastructure that reflects where growth is actually happening in the country.
Tourism and Business Expected to Benefit
Dubai and Abu Dhabi are perennially among the top international destinations for Indian travellers. Between tourism, shopping, trade events, exhibitions and family visits, millions of Indians pass through the UAE every year.
Direct flights from Guwahati make it easier for international visitors from the UAE to explore Assam and the wider Northeast in return — a region with genuine tourism appeal that hasn’t always been easy to reach. For the local hospitality sector, better inbound connectivity could make a noticeable difference.
On the business side, stronger air links between Northeast India and the Middle East open up real possibilities for trade partnerships, investment conversations and commercial relationships that are simply harder to build when getting there takes half a day.

Air India’s Network Continues to Grow
The Guwahati-Dubai and Guwahati-Abu Dhabi routes are part of a larger expansion story playing out at Air India under Tata Group ownership. The airline has been steadily adding new routes, modernising its fleet and raising the bar on passenger experience as it works to reclaim its place among Asia’s leading carriers.
Connecting regional cities directly to international destinations has become a clear part of that strategy. Rather than funnelling all international traffic through the big metros, Air India is recognising that demand exists in places like Guwahati — and building for it.
For the residents of Northeast India, these new services represent something straightforward and long overdue: a direct connection to the world.
