Dubai Duty Free has become the first airport retailer in the Middle East to accept regulated cryptocurrency payments — a milestone that places it ahead of most retail environments anywhere in the world, not just the region.
Eligible customers can now use Crypto Pay at Dubai International Airport (DXB), Al Maktoum International Airport and through the official Dubai Duty Free online store. The integration fits neatly into Dubai’s broader digital economy push and adds another dimension to the payment options already available at one of the world’s busiest travel retail operations.
How the Cryptocurrency Payment System Works
The service runs through Crypto Pay, a regulated digital payment platform built for exactly this kind of transaction — making cryptocurrency usable in a real retail environment without complexity or friction.
At physical stores, eligible UAE resident customers select Crypto Pay at checkout and scan their unique QR code using their Crypto Pay account to confirm the payment. For mobile shoppers, the process redirects automatically to the Crypto App, where transaction details are reviewed before the payment is confirmed.
The mechanics on the retailer’s side are equally clean. Once a transaction is approved, Dubai Duty Free receives the value in UAE Dirhams through a regulated payment infrastructure — so the retailer settles in local currency while the customer pays in crypto. It’s a setup that removes the volatility concern from the retailer’s perspective while giving customers genuine flexibility.

Available Across Airports and Online
The payment option isn’t limited to one terminal or one channel. Travellers can use Crypto Pay while shopping at Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest international airport by passenger volume, and at Al Maktoum International Airport.
The same option is available on the official Dubai Duty Free website, which means eligible customers can use it whether they’re browsing from home before a trip or picking up a last-minute purchase airside. The multi-channel availability gives the feature genuine utility rather than making it a novelty that only works in specific circumstances.
Built on an Earlier Partnership
The launch didn’t happen overnight. It follows the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Dubai Duty Free and Crypto back in July 2025, which set out a framework for exploring blockchain-powered payment technologies and digital innovation opportunities within travel retail.
The intervening year was spent doing the practical work of integrating Crypto Pay into Dubai Duty Free’s existing retail infrastructure — a process that required both technical alignment and regulatory preparation. The successful rollout is one of the first concrete outcomes of that partnership and marks a meaningful step beyond the MoU stage into actual deployment.
Supporting Dubai’s Cashless Economy Vision
The timing aligns closely with one of Dubai’s most prominent economic initiatives. The Dubai Cashless Strategy — a central plank of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 — aims to make 90 percent of all financial transactions across public and private sectors cashless by the end of 2026.
Dubai has already expanded digital payment infrastructure across government services, transport, hospitality, retail and tourism. Adding cryptocurrency acceptance at one of the world’s largest airport retailers is a logical and visible next step in that programme, and it sends a clear signal about where the emirate sees digital commerce heading.
It also reinforces Dubai’s broader positioning as a serious global hub for financial technology and blockchain innovation — an ambition that’s been backed by regulation, infrastructure and institutional participation rather than just aspiration.
More Convenience for International Travellers
Dubai Duty Free has consistently expanded its digital payment options ahead of most comparable retailers. It already accepts Apple Pay, Alipay and TerraPay. Crypto Pay joins that list, extending the range of choices available to customers who prefer to manage their finances through digital assets.
For international travellers who are active crypto users, the practical benefit is real. Being able to use digital assets to buy luxury goods, electronics, perfumes, fashion, chocolates and other duty-free products — without converting to cash or waiting for a card transaction — is the kind of friction removal that makes a meaningful difference at a busy airport.

Leadership Highlights Digital Innovation
Dubai Duty Free Managing Director Ramesh Cidambi described the new option as a move toward greater customer convenience through innovative digital payment solutions — positioning it as part of a longer-term direction rather than a one-off initiative.
Crypto President and Chief Operating Officer Eric Anziani welcomed the partnership as a significant milestone in expanding regulated cryptocurrency payments, describing Dubai Duty Free as one of the world’s most recognisable travel retail brands.
The collaboration points to something broader — a growing alignment between established retail brands and regulated fintech companies around the understanding that digital payment options are no longer a niche concern but a mainstream customer expectation. Dubai Duty Free, and Dubai more broadly, appears to be positioning itself at the front of that shift.
