The fourth season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is scheduled to begin on January 9th. The first match will be between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. The match will be played at 7:30 pm at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Following the Indian women’s team’s ODI World Cup win last year, this year’s WPL is special in many ways.
This 28-day tournament will feature 22 matches between five teams. The eliminator will be held in Vadodara on February 3rd, and the final on February 5th. The matches will be played at two venues. Two of the five teams changed their captains before the new season. The winning team of WPL 2026 will receive a prize money of ₹6 crore this time as well. The runner-up team will get ₹3 crore.

What format will the tournament be played in?
The WPL 2026 season will be played in a league format, as usual. All five teams will play two matches each against each other. This means that each team will play eight matches in the tournament. After the league stage concludes, the team at the top of the points table will advance directly to the final. The 2nd and 3rd teams will play an eliminator; the winner will advance to the final. The 4th and 5th teams will be eliminated.
How many days will there be doubleheaders?
For three seasons, there hasn’t been a single doubleheader (two matches in one day) in the WPL. However, this time the schedule includes two doubleheaders. Both will be held on Saturdays at the DY Patil Stadium. The first doubleheader will be played on January 10th and the second on January 17th.
How many matches will be played at which venue?
This time, the tournament will be played at two venues instead of four. The DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai will host the first 11 matches, and the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara will host the final 11 matches. Both playoff matches will be held in Vadodara.
How many doubleheader matches will be played?
This time, two doubleheader matches will be played in the WPL, meaning two matches in one day. The first doubleheader will be played on January 10th and the second on January 17th.

How many foreign players can be in the playing eleven?
A team’s playing XI can have a maximum of four foreign players. The remaining seven players must be from India. If a team includes a player from an associate country in the playing XI, they have the option to field five foreign players.
How many teams, and who will be the captains?
Five teams are participating in the fourth season: Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriors, and Gujarat Giants. Except for Mumbai, Gujarat, and Bengaluru, all other teams have changed their captains. Delhi will be captained by Jemimah Rodrigues. Uttar Pradesh will be captained by Meg Lanning, who previously led Delhi to the finals in all three seasons.
Who has won the most titles?
The Mumbai Indians are the most successful team in the WPL. They reached the playoffs in all three seasons and won the title twice. The team failed to reach the finals in 2024, losing to RCB in the eliminator. Bengaluru also won the title that season. Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh teams have yet to reach a final.

Which teams are the title contenders?
Defending champions Mumbai Indians, 2024 champions Royal Challengers Bangalore, and three-time runner-up Delhi Capitals are the top contenders for the title. All three acquired strong teams in the mega auction. Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat teams failed to build strong teams despite having significant amounts of money at the auction.
What will be the prize money?
Like in all three seasons, the winning team will receive a prize of ₹6 crore (approximately $1.5 million). The runner-up team will receive ₹3 crore (approximately $1.5 million). The tournament’s best batter, best bowler, player of the tournament, player with the most sixes, and player with the best strike rate will receive ₹5 lakh each. The player of the final will receive ₹2.5 lakh (approximately $1.5 million). The player of the match in the remaining matches will receive ₹1 lakh each.
When and where to watch WPL matches?
WPL will be telecast live on the Star Network. Online streaming of matches will be available on the JioHotstar app. All night matches in WPL 2026 will start at 6:00 pm as per Dubai time. The toss will take place at 5:30 pm. The first match on doubleheader days will begin at 2:00 pm.
