The United Arab Emirates and Oman have taken a significant step towards closer ties and a more sustainable future with the announcement of the Hafeet Rail project. This high-speed railway will connect the two nations, bringing faster travel times, reduced emissions, and a boost to the regional economy.
Following a joint business forum in Abu Dhabi, the countries confirmed their commitment to the multi-billion dollar project, marking the official transition from planning to implementation.
Hafeet Rail, formerly known as the عمان والإمارات العربية المتØدة للسكك الØديدية (Oman and Etihad Rail Company) in Arabic, reflects the collaborative nature of the venture. Partnership agreements have been signed, major construction contracts awarded, and companies from both sides will work together as a unified team.
Benefits for Passengers and Businesses
The initial phase of Hafeet Rail will connect Al Wathba near Abu Dhabi with the Omani port city of Sohar. Passengers can expect a dramatic reduction in travel times, with journeys between the two cities completed in just 100 minutes thanks to speeds reaching 200 kilometers per hour. Spacious trains capable of accommodating up to 400 passengers will ensure a comfortable and efficient travel experience.
The project promises significant advantages for businesses as well. Freight trains with a capacity equivalent to 300 trucks will offer a more sustainable and cost-effective way to move goods. This is estimated to lead to an impressive 80 percent reduction in carbon emissions generated by road freight transport.
Dubai to Oman: A Sustainable and Strategic Move
The scenic route, named after the Jebel Hafeet mountain range it traverses, will showcase the diverse landscapes of the region. The project aligns with the UAE’s ongoing investment in its national passenger rail network, raising the possibility of future direct train connections from Dubai to Oman.
Beyond bilateral benefits, Hafeet Rail represents a crucial step towards the long-term vision of a unified Gulf Railway connecting the GCC countries. While the ambitious 2025 completion target for the broader network remains elusive, Hafeet Rail’s progress paves the way for a more integrated and sustainable transportation system across the region.
A Look Ahead: Speeding Towards the Future
The project board is ambitious, aiming for a “record-breaking timeline for implementation.” This suggests passengers and businesses could be reaping the rewards of Hafeet Rail sooner than anticipated. The UAE and Oman’s commitment to this high-speed rail project signifies a new chapter in regional cooperation, economic development, and environmental responsibility. As construction progresses, Hafeet Rail promises to transform the way people and goods move between these two Gulf nations.
