Only 14 days are left in the Asia Cup T20 tournament. The Indian team captain Suryakumar Yadav has admitted that the six-week rest he got after the injury was a challenge for him as well as an opportunity to bring himself back to the ‘best level.’ In a video released by the BCCI, India’s T20 captain Suryakumar spoke openly. Suryakumar underwent sports hernia surgery in Munich in June due to pain in the right side of his abdomen. After this, he underwent rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Improved in the game during the break, 34-year-old Suryakumar is now fully fit and will lead the Indian team in the Asia Cup starting in the UAE on September 9. He said, ‘I am feeling good now. The routine of the last five or six weeks has made me stronger. This comeback has been positive for me.’
Suryakumar described rehab as a means of mental strength. He said, ‘The most important thing is to have the right people around you during rehab. I considered it an opportunity to improve my game further. I worked by dividing each week into small goals and kept moving in the right direction.’ Recalling the initial feeling of his injury, he said, ‘I came to know about it at the end of the IPL. It was similar to the injury suffered last year, and then I realized that the problem could be serious.’
The challenge of regaining rhythm
Under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, India has won 17 out of 22 matches while losing four. One match was drawn. Suryakumar Yadav’s win percentage in T20Is is 77.27, which is the second-highest among players who have captained 10+ matches for India. Rohit Sharma tops the list with 79.03 percent. Suryakumar is currently at number six on the ICC T20I rankings. His form with the bat will be crucial for the team.

However, Suryakumar Yadav’s batting performance has been affected to some extent due to captaincy. Suryakumar Yadav did not captain India in 61 T20I matches as a player. In these matches, he has scored 2040 runs at an average of 43.40 and a strike rate of 168.17. However, his consistency as a captain has been affected. In the 22 matches in which he has captained India, his average has been only 26.57. Injury troubled him.

This is not the first time Suryakumar Yadav has faced such challenges. In December 2023, Suryakumar Yadav suffered an ankle injury. Due to which he had to miss the Indian tour of Afghanistan. After this, he underwent ankle surgery. Then, in early 2024, another surgery for a sports hernia also occurred in his career. But every time he made a strong comeback, and this time too, he is full of the same confidence as before the Asia Cup.
