The decision to accept rubles comes in response to a surge in Russian visitors to Dubai. With over 1.3 million Russian travelers passing through DXB in the first half of 2024 alone, it’s evident that the emirate has become a popular destination for Russian tourists.
A spokesperson for Dubai Duty Free explained that while the exchange of Russian rubles has been available at their exchange offices for some time, the decision to extend this acceptance to point-of-sale systems was driven by increasing customer demand. This move is expected to significantly improve the shopping experience for Russian travelers visiting Dubai.
DXB itself has witnessed remarkable growth in passenger traffic, with over 44.9 million passengers passing through its terminals in the first six months of 2024. Despite the challenges posed by a severe storm in April, which led to widespread flight disruptions, the airport has demonstrated resilience, recording an impressive 7.5% increase in passenger numbers between April and June compared to the same period in 2023.
Dubai Duty Free‘s acceptance of Russian rubles is a testament to the emirate’s commitment to providing world-class services to its diverse customer base. As Dubai continues to solidify its position as a global travel hub, initiatives like these contribute to enhancing the overall visitor experience.
