This recognition comes as part of the “Honoring UAE’s Visionaries: Commemorative Streets” initiative, launched by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT). This project aims to pay tribute to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the UAE’s growth and development. The newly named “George Matthew Street” is situated near Sheikh Shakbooth Medical City in Al Mafraq, a fitting location for a man who has dedicated his life to improving healthcare in the region.

From Humble Beginnings to Pioneering Achievements

Dr. George Matthew’s story is one of remarkable service and adaptation. He arrived in the UAE in 1967 at the young age of 26, ready to embark on a journey that would redefine healthcare in Al Ain. With the support of the late Sheikh Zayed, Dr. Matthew established the city’s very first clinic, laying the groundwork for a more robust medical infrastructure.

Over the years, Dr. Matthew’s leadership extended far beyond the walls of that initial clinic. He played a pivotal role in shaping Al Ain’s medical services, assuming the position of lead doctor in 1972. His commitment continued well into the new millennium, as he served as a valuable advisor to the Health Authority in 2001.

A Champion of Modern Medicine

Dr. Matthew’s influence wasn’t limited to leadership roles. He actively championed the introduction of modern medical practices within the UAE. His dedication to professional development is evident from his pursuit of specialized studies in England and Harvard, focusing on tropical diseases and hospital management respectively. Dr. George Matthew, fondly referred to as “Matyous” by the locals, has earned the respect and admiration of countless individuals throughout his career. His unwavering commitment to serving the UAE is exemplified by his own words: “I am ready to serve the country and its citizens for as long as I live.” This sentiment speaks volumes about the dedication that has driven his remarkable journey.

Even at the age of 84, Dr. George Matthew continues to serve the community within the Private Health department, working alongside another esteemed healthcare expert, Dr. Abdul Rahim Jaafar. This unwavering commitment to his profession is an inspiration to all.
