The busiest Metro station in Dubai, i.e., Burj Khalifa Metro Station, is going to be massively expanded when the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) collaborates with Emaar Properties to make significant improvements to the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station to reduce congestion and decrease the waiting time during the high-traffic time.

The renovation and upgrade are based on the presence of ever-increasing passenger traffic at the station, which is the primary public transport portal to Downtown Dubai, Burj Khalifa, and Dubai Mall. During celebrations such as New Year’s Eve, public holidays, and major occasions, demand is high, and this exerts a lot of stress on the infrastructure in place.

Bigger Station, Higher Capacity
The overall size of the station will also grow to 8,500 square metres after completion, whereas it was 6,700 square metres previously. The number of passengers served per hour will increase by 7,250 to 12,320 travellers, and the daily passenger handling will be expected to be 220,000 passengers – a percentage increase of 65.
This growth is to relieve congestion and enhance the traffic flow of passengers in the peak seasons of the year. Future improvements are being planned in terms of a bigger concourse and platform, more escalators and lifts, and a new design layout that brings the entry and exit gates apart. Additional fare gates will be put up, pedestrian bridges will be improved, and commercial areas will be increased. Connection to other modes of transport and movement will also be enhanced.

Strategic Investment in Dubai’s Urban Core
Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the RTA, stated that the project is a long-term strategy of managing growth in one of the most concentrated tourism and economic areas of Dubai. The expansion of Burj Khalifa Metro Station is a strategic investment in the centre of the urban core, where tourism/economic activity is most concentrated at Dubai core, Al Tayer said.
It highlights the proactive infrastructure that RTA plans to implement to keep up with the fast population growth and increasing number of visitors, and ensure easier flows during the high seasons and major events. He observed that the number of people who pass through the station has increased by 7.5 per cent in the last five years and that the demand is projected to keep increasing up to 2040.
A Vital Hub for Residents and Visitors
Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station is also among the most important stations in the Dubai Metro. It is directly served by certain landmarks that are the most frequented in the city and has one of the largest passenger traffic in the system, especially during the New Year’s Eve celebrations that attract hundreds of thousands of people to Downtown Dubai. The RTA says that the upgrade will provide a step change in the quality of its services, making it safer, more comfortable, and efficient during peak travel periods.
Public-Private Collaboration
According to Mohamed Alabbar, founder of Emaar, the project represents the value of cooperation between the private and the public sector in assisting with the long-term development of Dubai.
According to Alabbar, the extension of Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station is a direct investment in the quality of life and happiness of people, as it reduces the duration of travel, increases the availability of the most high-profile places in Dubai, and improves the visitor experience during peak hours.
He furthered that the collaboration with the RTA facilitates sustainable urban development and keeps up with the mushrooming number of residents and tourists in Downtown Dubai annually.
Demand Continues to Rise
The passenger statistics indicate the intensity of the demand at the station. Ridership has increased since 2013, when it was slightly over six million passengers, to over 10.5 million in 2024, and this was almost 11 million passengers last year. Daily footfall is currently about 56,000 passengers.

As Dubai keeps on investing in increasing transport infrastructure, the expansion of Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station is likely to make a difference in enhancing mobility, controlling crowds, and helping Dubai achieve its goal of providing an efficient, world-class public transport environment.
