The Unicode Consortium described the dirham sign as one of the most anticipated new characters in its September 16 announcement. The update also added symbols for the Maldivian rufiyaa and Omani rial.
Before the latest update, the lack of standardized codes made it harder to use these currency symbols consistently across different digital platforms. The new codes give software vendors a common technical standard for implementation.
When Will the Dirham Symbol Appear on Phones?
The addition to Unicode does not mean that the new dirham symbol will immediately appear on every smartphone or computer. Device manufacturers, operating system companies, font providers and app developers must first add support for the character.
Keyboard makers will also decide how users can access the symbol. As a result, the sign could appear in some apps and websites before it becomes available directly through a phone’s keyboard.
There is also no fixed date for when the symbol will be supported across all devices. Older phones and computers may not receive native support if their manufacturers no longer provide software updates.
Businesses Can Use the New Dirham Code
The new Unicode code will be particularly useful for businesses and developers working with prices and financial information. Once platforms support the character, companies can use the standard symbol in prices, invoices, and other financial text.

UAE Dirham Symbol Was Unveiled in 2025
The Central Bank of the UAE officially unveiled the dirham symbol on March 27, 2025. Its design is based on the letter “D”, representing the first letter of dirham, combined with two horizontal lines.
According to Unicode’s specification, the two lines are inspired by the UAE flag and also represent the financial and monetary stability associated with the country’s currency.
The Central Bank has also published guidance showing how the symbol could potentially be placed on a keyboard, including a suggested position on the number 6 key. However, the final keyboard placement will depend on individual manufacturers.

What the Unicode Update Means for UAE Digital Payments

The UAE dirham symbol is part of a much larger Unicode 18.0 update. The latest version adds 13,007 characters, including nine new emoji characters. Following the update, the Unicode Standard now contains 172,808 characters, according to the Unicode Consortium.
For UAE residents, the most visible impact of the latest update may eventually be the ability to type and display the dirham symbol more easily. Until device and software companies add support, however, users may continue to see different ways of representing the UAE currency in digital text.
