Dubai International Airport has become the most unexpected venue yet for the Dubai Mallathon. Terminal 3 — normally the domain of departing passengers, check-in queues and boarding gate sprints — has been transformed into an indoor walking and running track, with Dubai Airports employees, members of the wider oneDXB community and People of Determination among the first to take part.
The move brings Dubai’s popular summer fitness initiative into a completely new kind of space, and it reflects a growing understanding that getting people active during the hottest months requires creative thinking about where that activity can actually happen.
Dubai Mallathon Arrives at DXB Terminal 3
The first session took place at Terminal 3 Departures, with participants completing laps through the very spaces that are usually full of travellers heading off on their journeys. The route followed a one-kilometre loop past the departures entrance, baggage check-in counters and areas near security and immigration.
It’s a surreal experience in the best possible way — using one of the world’s busiest airports as a fitness circuit. Many participants covered two to three kilometres across multiple laps, and the session wrapped up with refreshments, goodie bags and participation medals.
When Will the Dubai Mallathon Take Place at DXB?
The DXB edition of the Mallathon will run every Friday throughout August 2026, with sessions bringing together airport staff, community partners and members of the public across key areas in Terminal 3.
The final session on August 28 carries extra significance — it will also mark Emirati Women’s Day, with Dubai Airports extending a specific invitation to the wider oneDXB community to take part in that event.
The airport sessions add a genuinely new dimension to a programme that has traditionally operated out of large shopping centres. Moving it into DXB expands both the reach of the initiative and the kind of experience it offers participants.
Who Can Take Part?
The opening DXB session was an invite-only event for Dubai Airports employees and oneDXB community members — the network of organisations that form Dubai’s aviation ecosystem, including Emirates, flydubai, dnata and Dubai Duty Free.
People of Determination were part of the session from the start, which is consistent with the Mallathon’s emphasis on making physical activity inclusive rather than narrowly defined. The involvement of Team AngelWolf — a Dubai-based non-profit focused on inclusion and adaptive sport — reinforced that commitment. The organisation regularly works to create sporting environments where families and People of Determination can participate together in endurance activities.
Why DXB Is a Unique Mallathon Location
There’s something genuinely novel about using an active international airport terminal as a fitness track. Airports are places of almost constant movement, but the kind of movement that happens there — purposeful, directed, often stressed — is very different from the deliberate, communal experience of a Mallathon session.
Dubai Airports’ Chief Operating Officer Majed Al Joker described the initiative as something more than an exercise programme. It’s about bringing people together in a shared space, and making physical activity something that fits into the rhythm of working life rather than competing with it. For airport staff working shift patterns, having a fitness event that comes to their workplace rather than requiring them to seek it out elsewhere is a meaningful practical difference.
Dubai Mallathon Makes Fitness Easier During Summer
DXB’s involvement is part of the broader Dubai Mallathon — a summer fitness programme built around the very reasonable observation that outdoor exercise in July and August in Dubai is not particularly appealing for most people.
The solution is to move the activity inside. By turning air-conditioned malls and now an international airport into walking and running circuits, the Mallathon makes exercise comfortable, accessible and social during the months when outdoor activity feels least realistic. It’s free and open to residents and visitors of different ages and nationalities at participating locations across the city.
Dubai Mallathon’s Growing Popularity
The programme launched last summer and has grown quickly. The 2025 edition attracted more than 40,000 participants, who together recorded over 120 million steps across participating malls. It also claimed a Guinness World Records title for the most runners in a mall run event — a measure of just how broadly the initiative has been embraced.
Adding DXB to the list of participating venues this year is a natural extension of that momentum, and it signals that the Mallathon concept has proven itself well enough to move into spaces well beyond shopping centres.

Fitness, Inclusion and Community at DXB
What stood out about the airport edition wasn’t just the unusual setting — it was the atmosphere the event created within it. Fitness trainer Daniel Mungai (Coach Dan) led warm-up exercises and set a tone that made people of different abilities and backgrounds feel genuinely welcome rather than like spectators at someone else’s event.
For the people who took part, it offered something beyond a workout. Colleagues who spend their working lives moving through the same terminal had a reason to do it differently for a morning — alongside family members, community partners and people from across the airport ecosystem who they might not otherwise have reason to spend time with.
Dubai’s Wider Wellbeing Vision
The Dubai Mallathon at DXB sits within a much larger picture. It supports the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033 and reflects Dubai Airports’ own interest in making the airport a place of shared experience rather than purely a transport mechanism.
For Dubai as a whole, initiatives like this are expressions of an ongoing commitment to building healthier communities — not through grand gestures, but through practical, accessible programmes that meet people where they already are. For the thousands of people who work at DXB, the Mallathon coming to them is exactly that.
