Thunder Moon: Calling all skywatchers in the UAE! Mark your calendars for July 21st because a breathtaking celestial event is just around the corner – the aptly named Thunder Moon. Get ready to witness a radiant full moon bathe the night sky in its silvery glow.

Thunder Moon

A Tradition Steeped in History

Full moons have captivated humanity for millennia, inspiring countless stories and traditions. In North America, Indigenous tribes named each full moon based on the natural world and seasonal occurrences. This July, the UAE will be awestruck by the Thunder Moon, a name that reflects the increased frequency of thunderstorms during this time of year.

But the July full moon boasts other names as well. Some call it the Halfway Summer Moon, a straightforward moniker that highlights its arrival smack dab in the middle of the summer season. Others refer to it as the Buck Moon, referencing the period when male deer, or bucks, shed their old antlers and begin to grow new, impressive ones.

Witnessing the Thunder Moon’s Majesty

The beauty of the Thunder Moon doesn’t require any special equipment – all you need is a clear view of the night sky. Head outside on July 21st and gaze upwards. The moon will appear larger and brighter than usual, casting a soft, ethereal light on the landscape.

Looking Beyond the Thunder Moon

While the Thunder Moon promises a captivating spectacle, skywatchers in the UAE have even more to look forward to in the coming months. Mark your calendars for August 19th, because that’s when the first of four consecutive supermoons will grace the night sky! A supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, making it appear larger and brighter than usual. This year, we’ll be treated to a quartet of supermoons – on August 19th, September 18th, October 17th, and November 15th. The last supermoon visible from the UAE was in September 2023, so these upcoming celestial events are not to be missed!

Tips for Optimal Viewing

To fully appreciate the Thunder Moon’s brilliance, consider these tips:

  • Find a location with minimal light pollution. This means escaping the bright city lights and heading to a more open area with a clear view of the horizon.
  • Bring a blanket or camping chair. Settle in comfortably and enjoy the celestial show.
  • Plan your timing. While the moon will be visible throughout the night, it’s most spectacular when it first rises above the horizon, often appearing larger and more colorful due to atmospheric effects.
  • Consider bringing binoculars or a telescope. These tools can enhance your viewing experience, allowing you to observe the moon’s craters and other surface features in greater detail.

Embrace the Wonder

The Thunder Moon, and the upcoming supermoons, offer a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with the wonders of the cosmos. So, step outside, soak in the beauty of the night sky, and be captivated by the power and majesty of the moon.
