Dubai Summers: How to Beat the Heat and Support Delivery Drivers

Dubai summers are notorious. Soaring temperatures that regularly touch 50 degrees Celsius combined with stifling humidity make venturing outdoors a challenge, especially during the peak heat hours. Delivery drivers, however, don’t have the luxury of staying cool indoors. They brave the harsh Dubai summers to ensure our deliveries arrive safely and efficiently.

This summer, while you’re relaxing in your air-conditioned haven, there are ways to show your appreciation for the dedication of Dubai’s delivery drivers during these scorching months. Dubai itself is taking significant steps to support these essential workers, and you can also play a part.

Dubai Takes Action to Beat the Heat for Delivery Drivers

Recognizing the challenges faced by delivery drivers in Dubai summers, the city has implemented several initiatives. In 2023, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) constructed a network of 40 dedicated rest areas across Dubai. These air-conditioned sanctuaries provide delivery drivers with a much-needed respite from the Dubai summer heat. Drivers can use these areas to cool down, catch their breath, and rehydrate between deliveries.

Further enhancing support in July 2024, the RTA added three innovative water dispensers to these rest areas. These ingenious devices utilize Dubai’s abundant humidity, transforming it into clean drinking water readily available to delivery drivers.

Another creative initiative is the “Freej Fridge” campaign. For several weeks each summer, local ice cream trucks participating in the program transform into mobile oases, distributing refreshing treats to delivery drivers and construction workers across Dubai. This simple act provides a welcome break from the relentless Dubai summer heat.

Dubai Summers: Delivery Platforms Step Up

Delivery platforms like Deliveroo are also taking a stand to ensure driver well-being during Dubai summers. Launched in July, their “Respect Pledge” is an initiative encouraging restaurants and shops using their platform to prioritize the safety and comfort of delivery drivers. Signatories to the pledge commit to providing rest areas, shaded waiting zones, and readily available water for drivers during the hottest months. Popular brands like Pickl, Five Guys, House of Pops, and Pizza Express are among those who have already signed on to show their support for delivery drivers in Dubai summers.

How You Can Help Delivery Drivers Beat the Dubai Summer Heat

While significant efforts are underway at the city and platform level, there are ways you, the customer, can directly support delivery drivers during Dubai summers. Here are some simple yet impactful actions you can take:

  • Keep Cool with Water: Have a few extra water bottles on hand. Offer one to the delivery driver upon arrival; it’s a small gesture that can make a big difference in the scorching Dubai summer heat. Leaving a bottle outside your door for them to grab is another thoughtful option.
  • Beat the Heat with a Snack: Consider keeping some small snacks or treats readily available. Offering a snack alongside the water bottle is a way to show your appreciation for their hard work and provide them with a quick energy boost.
  • Courtesy is Key: Treat delivery drivers with respect and courtesy. A simple “thank you” goes a long way. Remember, they’re braving the Dubai summer heat to deliver your order.
  • Minimize Waiting Time: Be mindful of how long the delivery driver might be waiting outside your residence. If you know you’ll be stepping away, try to arrange for a secure drop-off location or provide clear instructions to expedite the delivery process.
  • Be Reachable: Ensure your phone is easily accessible when expecting a delivery. Unreachable customers can lead to frustrating delays for drivers already battling the Dubai summer heat.
  • Order with the Heat in Mind: Consider the time of day when placing your order. While a midday delivery might be convenient for you, it’s the hottest part of the day for the driver. Opting for an evening delivery, when temperatures are lower, can make a significant difference for their comfort.

By taking these steps and supporting the initiatives already underway, we can all help ensure Dubai’s delivery drivers have a safer and more comfortable experience navigating the scorching Dubai summer heat. After all, a little consideration goes a long way, especially during the intense heat of a Dubai summer.
