Have you ever thought about what becomes of the cooking oil you threw out after cooking? Dubai is in process of trying to put that sloppy waste to a new use by converting it into a form of biodiesel fuel in one of the most ambitious sustainability programs of this time. In another ambitious project, Dubai is turning waste cooking oil into renewable biodiesel in line with green economy and circular sustainability strategy.

In a new effort just announced, Dubai Municipality is joining forces with a firm called BiOD Technology FZCO to pick up used cooking oil (UCO) and other fats, oils and grease (FOG) that may be found in households and restaurants throughout the city. This garbage will be recycled to make B100 biodiesel a clean-burning fuel that can help in cutting carbon footprint and environmental degradation.
Greener homes and kitchens
Not only will this project minimize the adverse consequences of pouring oil down the drain, e.g., clogged pipes and environmental pollution, but it will also contribute to the idea of a circular economy that Dubai actively pursues, turning waste to useful resources.
Businesses and the residents will be a focal point in this green mission. Soon, households will be invited to store their used cooking oil and to dispose of it in a safe manner and restaurants and commercial kitchens, the main sources of UCO, will become instrumental in the collection process.
High-level backing
The contract was signed in front of top notch officials, such as Fahad Al-Awadhi of Dubai Municipality amongst others, Youssef Bastaki and Shiva Vig of BiOD Technology. The cooperation is a MoU where BiOD is permitted to recover and convert UCO into high grade biodiesel fuel.
Adel Al Marzooqi, CEO of the Waste and Sewerage Agency at Dubai Municipality, stated: That is why by converting waste into a useful energy source, we can not only preserve the infrastructure, minimize the risks but also contribute to Dubai Vision 2030 of environmental sustainability.

Supporting the UAE’s green goals
The initiative will support the Green Economy objectives of the UAE, which focus on reducing the carbon footprint and cutting the cost of wastewater. Biodiesel is a renewable and cleaner burning fuel compared to fossil fuel and is a very formidable weapon in minimizing emissions in the transport and industrial sectors.
Ahmed bin Fahad Al Muhairi, Chairman of BiOD Technology, said: “This cooperation with Dubai Municipality is a move towards practical improvement of the environment. We are creating a community of businesses providing a sustainable ecosystem geared towards global improvement together.
The same thought was shared by Shiva Vig, the CEO of BioD: “Through innovative technology and industry know-how, BiOD has transformed kitchen wastes into high-value and renewable biodiesel and established the grounds of expanded sustainable waste management systems.”
A step toward circular innovation
The initiative is the most recent of sustainability-oriented projects made by the emirate as the region looks to migrate to waste-to-energy produced by former cooking oil. By anticipation and the power of partnerships and technology, Dubai currently is on the forefront of creating every-day waste to create long-term gains to the environment. To the residents, it is a strong reminder that nothing should stop a cleaner, greener future: even the slightest alterations in the kitchen routines can have a ripple effect.
