Dubai just added another shiny chapter to its “city of gold” story. Joyalukkas Jewellery has unveiled a pair of handmade 22-carat gold jhumkas that weigh 16.514 kg together, and they have won two Guinness World Records. The earrings are called Mayura Sahasra, which means “A Thousand Peacocks.”
The Records and the Numbers
Guinness World Records verified both titles: the heaviest pair of gold earrings and the largest pair of earrings. The company says the combined net gold weight is more than five times the previous record for the heaviest pair.
Here’s a quick look at the numbers:
- Gold: 22 carat
- Combined net weight: 16.514 kg
- Length of each earring: 1.215 metres
- Diameter of each earring: 0.682 metres
- Artisans involved: 55
- Hours of work: 5,840
That’s a lot of gold and a lot of patience.
How They Were Made
A team of 55 skilled artisans worked on the pair for several months, spending 5,840 hours in total. They stuck to the traditional bell-shaped jhumka design, a style closely linked to South Asian bridal jewellery.
The design is built around the peacock, a bird seen in Indian culture as a symbol of grace, pride, and beauty. The name comes from a legend about a divine peacock that shed a thousand feathers, each carrying a prayer, wish or dream. The detailing on the earrings is meant to reflect the bird’s plumage.
Why Joyalukkas Made Them
John Paul Alukkas, CEO of Joyalukkas Jewellery, told Gulf News the company has been in the UAE for around 40 years and has watched Dubai break many records. The team wanted to do something to give back to the city.
Dr Joy Alukkas, the group’s chairman, called the earrings a tribute to Dubai and to the artisans behind them. He said winning two Guinness titles with one creation was a proud moment for his family, the company’s teams in 13 countries, and its customers.
The Unveiling
The earrings were unveiled on Saturday, October 24, at Jewel of Joy by Joyalukkas in Dubai Gold District. UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri did the honours. A Guinness adjudicator presented certificates for both titles, and several industry representatives and guests attended.
Jewel of Joy recently opened, and the company describes it as the biggest jewellery showroom in the Middle East.
A Big Contrast With Today’s Trends
Here’s an interesting twist. While these earrings show jewellery on a huge scale, John Paul said buying habits have changed a lot since his grandfather started the business. Customers today are asking for lightweight designs, and the company offers 22 carat and 18 carat collections. It also plans to bring in 14-carat jewellery.
So the giant jhumkas are a showpiece, not a sign of what most people are buying.
Where to See Them
The Mayura Sahasra earrings will be kept as a complete pair and displayed permanently at Jewel of Joy by Joyalukkas in Dubai Gold District. According to Gulf News, the showroom is open from 10 am to 10 pm, seven days a week, and entry is free.
If you’re visiting Dubai, it’s an easy stop to add to your list, especially since the district is a good place to see how the city’s gold trade works.
More Gold News From the District
Gold is keeping Dubai Gold District busy right now. The district has also announced plans for a gold walkway, though details are still limited. If you’re curious, we’ve put together what’s known so far in our story on Dubai’s planned 24 carat gold walkway and when it could open.
A pair of earrings that weigh more than 16 kg sounds like a stunt, but it also shows the skill behind traditional Indian jewellery making. Whether you care about records, craftsmanship, or just want a good photo, these jhumkas are now one of the more unusual sights in Dubai, and you can see them for free.
