Motorists travelling from Sharjah towards Dubai will soon get more road space on Emirates Road. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will open a five-kilometre expansion on August 30, adding two new lanes towards the Wadi Al Amardi area.
The timing comes just before schools reopen across the UAE on August 31. With parents, school buses and daily commuters returning after the summer break, traffic between Sharjah and Dubai is expected to increase.
The road improvement is designed to make the busy route more efficient during peak periods. RTA expects the additional lanes to help reduce congestion and shorten journey times for motorists using this section of Emirates Road.
Emirates Road Will Expand From Six to Eight Lanes
The affected stretch currently has six lanes in the direction covered by the project. After the expansion opens, the number will rise to eight lanes, creating additional space for vehicles travelling from Sharjah towards Wadi Al Amardi.
The increase will raise the road’s capacity from around 12,000 vehicles per hour to 16,000 vehicles per hour. That represents an increase of roughly 33%, or 4,000 additional vehicles per hour.
According to RTA, the higher capacity could reduce peak-hour journey times by up to 25%. The improvement is expected to support smoother traffic movement when the road experiences its heaviest demand.
Five-Kilometre Stretch Targets Sharjah-Dubai Traffic
The new lanes cover a five-kilometre section of Emirates Road in the direction of Wadi Al Amardi. This route is particularly important for people travelling between Sharjah, Dubai and other parts of the Northern Emirates.
The corridor carries a large mix of traffic, including private cars, commercial vehicles and heavy trucks. Improving capacity on a key section can therefore benefit both daily commuters and businesses that depend on reliable road connections.

More Than 240,000 Vehicles Use Emirates Road Every Day

Emirates Road Has Already Seen Several Upgrades
The latest expansion follows a series of improvements along Emirates Road in recent years. These projects have focused on making it easier for motorists to enter and leave the highway and improving connections with surrounding areas.
One of the previous developments included a new access point linking Emirates Road with Al Awir 1. RTA has also introduced traffic solutions at different points along the corridor and improved several entry and exit locations.
Connectivity with Al Amardi Street and nearby development areas has also been enhanced. Together, these projects are aimed at improving the movement of traffic across a growing part of Dubai.
