Indian cricket has a new T20I captain, and the announcement came with several other talking points attached. The BCCI named Shreyas Iyer as India’s T20I skipper ahead of the upcoming series against Ireland and England, with BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia and chief selector Ajit Agarkar announcing in Mumbai. Tilak Varma has been named vice-captain. India plays Ireland in a two-match T20I series in Belfast on June 26 and June 28, before heading to England for a five-match series from July 1 to July 11.
Shreyas Iyer Rewarded for Consistent Leadership Success
The captaincy appointment makes sense when you look at Iyer’s record over the past couple of years. Despite not playing a T20 International since December 2023, his leadership work in franchise cricket has been consistently impressive.
He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 — ending more than a decade of waiting for that franchise. He then guided Punjab Kings to the IPL final in 2025, transforming them from an inconsistent side into genuine contenders. He also captained Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy the same year. Across 101 IPL matches as captain, his win percentage sits above 54 percent. The case for giving him the national job was difficult to argue against.
A Remarkable Return to India’s T20 Plans
The backstory here is worth noting. While Iyer was winning titles in franchise cricket, India won two T20 World Cups without him. He missed the 2025 Asia Cup, was only considered as a replacement option before the 2026 T20 World Cup, and was ultimately left out of the final squad and reserve list entirely.
His IPL numbers during this period were difficult to ignore — 604 runs at a strike rate of 175 in 2025, followed by 498 runs at 168 in 2026. The gap between his performances and his selection status became increasingly hard to justify, and the selectors have now moved decisively to address it.
Suryakumar Yadav Faces Major Setback
The headline that will generate the most discussion is Suryakumar Yadav’s complete omission from both squads — not just losing the captaincy, but not being selected at all. This comes shortly after he led India to a T20 World Cup title on home soil. He has also been left out of India’s squad for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
The decision is a bold one. It echoes last year’s move to remove Rohit Sharma as ODI captain despite his Champions Trophy success — a signal that the selectors are willing to make significant calls when they believe long-term planning requires it.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Creates History
The most exciting announcement from a purely cricket perspective is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earning his maiden senior India call-up at just 15 years old. His IPL season clearly made the impression selectors needed to see.
With this selection, he becomes the youngest player ever called up to the Indian national team — breaking the record previously held by Sachin Tendulkar, who was 16 at his first selection. That’s not a comparison anyone makes lightly, and the selectors clearly believe the 15-year-old is ready for this environment.
Tilak Varma Handed Vice-Captaincy Role
Tilak Varma’s appointment as vice-captain at 23 reflects the management’s thinking about where Indian T20 cricket is heading. He has become a dependable part of the batting order and now carries additional leadership responsibility. The combination of Iyer’s experience and Tilak’s youth in the top two leadership roles gives the team an interesting dynamic going forward.

A New Era Begins for India’s T20 Team
This is one of the more significant reshuffles in Indian T20 cricket in some time. A new captain with a proven winning record, a young vice-captain being groomed for leadership, and a 15-year-old who just broke Tendulkar’s age record for national selection — the announcement has given Indian cricket plenty to talk about and plenty to look forward to.
